Wednesday TV series review

Wednesday Addams is a fifteen-year-old edgy girl who has been expelled from many high schools and is now forced to join Nevermore Academy: a place where her parents had met. This final stop is known to have nurtured what we know as “outcasts” and recluses. Wednesday finds it hard to fit in this setting despite being labeled as an “outcast” her whole life. Her morbid fascination with death and outgoing personality makes it hard for her to survive school. What makes it worse is that she soon finds out that someone near her is trying to get her killed. Wednesday’s sarcasm and highly independent nature make her unapproachable at the start but as the series progresses it is seen that she gets to witness some blossoming friendships like the one with her werewolf roomie Enid and her bee-obsessed fellow Eugene. Her unusuality does not go unnoticed by Xavier: a popular student at Nevermore and Tyler: a local barista and the son of the city’s sheriff. Soon she finds out that she capacitates psychic abilities: something her mother Morticia Adams had also started experiencing during her teenage years. Wednesday’s undying passion to solve mysteries coupled with her abilities pushes her to uncover the truth behind cryptic murders committed by a monster they call “Hyde”.

Tim Burton, the mastermind behind fictional and horror sensations like The Nightmare Before Christmas, Edward Scissorhands, and the Corpse Bride has directed a show after decades and unquestionably multiplied its worth. Jenna Ortega plays the titular role of the witty Wednesday Addams. She has been seen working in hit shows like You, Jane the Virgin and Stuck in the Middle and horror film projects like Scream 5. Catherine Zeta-Jones an academy award winner seemed like a perfect choice to play the very sultry and elegant Morticia Addams. Jones has also starred in massive projects like Chicago, Entrapment, and Oceans twelve. Luis Guzmán plays the role of warm and loving Gomez Addams. The actor is best known for his roles in Punch-Drunk Love and critically acclaimed projects like Boogie nights and Narcos. Issac Ordonez portrays the role of the timid Pugsley Addams. He has been a part of some short films and shows.

Christina Ricci however steals the show by returning and being a part of this spin-off. She plays a friendly botany teacher at Wednesday’s high school. Her unforgettable take on Wednesday in The Addams Family and Addams Family Values is iconic. Gwendoline Christie, the GøT sensation plays the role of Principle Larissa Weems who makes sure that her students and normies of the town don’t indulge in fights. Wednesday on Netflix – Rating and Records

Wednesday on Netflix
Wednesday on Netflix

Since its release in late November, Wednesday has broken several records on its streaming platform ‘Netflix’. The show has garnered more than 400 million hours of viewership. It has already triumphed over the most famous series on Netflix till-date ‘Stranger Things’ and has had the biggest opening week for any English show on Netflix. It currently rates a good 8.4 on IMDB and 72% on Rotten Tomatoes. It is however PG-14 for language, violence, and gore. So, the question remains, what makes it so different? Is it the perfectly seasoned casting or the aesthetically complimentary direction? The answer lies in between all of this.

It is reported that Tim Burton was supposed to direct the 90s Addams Family but could not due to prior commitments. Jenna Ortega’s commitment to her character is evident by the fact that she learned to play the cello, converse in German, and took archery lessons for this very role. She even choreographed the viral gothy dance sequence herself that was inspired by the works of Bob Fosse and Siouxsie Sioux. Ortega mentioned in an interview that in order to give her character a fresh look, she tried not to take help from Ricci’s somber and super serious portrayal of Wednesday thus resulting in her funny, expressive, and layered expressions. She also features a brand-new fringe and barely blinks! Another worth-mentioning fun fact about the filming process was that the iconic hand “Thing” is not CGI’ed but played by a magician. Additionally, the attire and the whole looks of Principal Weems are inspired by The Bird’s character Melanie Daniels. The addition of Christina Ricci who herself played Wednesday in The Addams Family, brings an extra spice to the show. It is also reported that Fred Armisen who plays Uncle Fester shaved his head for the role, that too willingly.

With a lot of success comes the same amount of scrutiny and this show cannot be an exception. The show has recently landed in hot waters after Jenna Ortega admitted that she had Covid while shooting the viral dance sequence. There has also been quite a lot of buzz surrounding the shows casting where two of the antagonists Bianca and Lucas are played by actors of African and Nigerian origins. This along with past accusations of Tim Burton’s films featuring whitewashed casts has gained a lot of attention. However, the actors have denied all these accusations and asked critics to not tell this coincidence over-shadow the show’s accomplishments.

The Addams Family spinoff “Wednesday” has proved to have quite the potential to become an independent franchise. Its blissfully horrific take on an old-fashioned gen-z teen-aged Wednesday Addams is all that the fans have been waiting for. Fans have grown to love this mystic comedy horror series and are looking forward to the next installations.
